Ο παρακάτω διάλογος σε mail είναι πέρα για πέρα αληθινός και δείχνει την απίστευτη επιμονή και υπομονή που έχει μια υπάλληλος για να πάρει το χρηματικό ποσό που της χρωστάει ένας πελάτης. Ο πελάτης δυστυχώς έχει μια περίεργη έννοια…αντιπραγματισμού!

THE man whose attempt to pay a bill with a drawing of a spider became an internet sensation says he is a serial prankster who believes the web should be a playground.

David Thorne, who runs the website 27bslash6.com, said the "spider drawing" emails became so popular that his site crashed under the strain of hundreds of thousands of visitors last week.

The emails, in which the prankster tries to pay a bill with a drawing of a seven-legged spider, are just one of the jokes posted to the website – and Mr Thorne says they are all real.

"Jane from the spider drawing transcript emailed me yesterday to say that she had been laughing the whole time and had enjoyed the correspondence."

In the emails, Mr Thorne tries to pay one "Jane Gilles" an outstanding amount with a simple drawing of a spider with a smile on its face.

"Dear Jane, I do not have any money so am sending you this drawing I did of a spider instead. I value the drawing at $233.95 so trust that this settles the matter," the email says.

The spider drawing itself became so popular that it was auctioned off on eBay, where it was won by a user who posted a bid for US$10,000 – though he has no intention of paying up.

"(The winner) rang me after the story made the news and we have had a good laugh over the attention it raised and been in contact via email since," says Mr Thorne.

The spider drawing isn't the only joke Mr Thorne has showcased on his site, which includes correspondence from characters like Jason the "good drawer", who offers poorly-drawn pictures of whales and tigers for several thousand dollars, and Simon the web guru, who gets "good ideas for websites all the time".

I assume none of the email transcripts are real, but are they based on real events? Have you ever tried to pay a bill with a drawing? Did “Dick” really send you hate mail?

The dialogue in the email transcripts are verbatim. Again, they would not be amusing to me otherwise. I did amend a spelling mistake after posting the spider page but that has been the only change. I have several other such conversations that have made me laugh over the last year or so and should add these to the site at some stage now that it seems apparent there is an audience for this kind of nonsense.

What sort of feedback have you received on the spider drawing email? Any highights?

The feedback has been extremely positive. I have received a lot of emails in the last week with only one or two negative – I seem to have touched a raw nerve mainly in regards to the "poor black boy" page, but as these complaints are written in single syllable format they are of no concern.

While I will be the first to point out that the content of my site is inane, the many emails I have received from people saying that they are going through a hard time in their life and that my stories have made them laugh and forget about their troubles for a moment have been quite surprising.

What is the state of the eBay auction on the drawing? I understand the winning bidder is not going to pay and you’re okay with that. Have you spoken to him?

The drawing remains unclaimed. Patrick, the person who made the winning bid of US$10,000 rang me after the story made the news and we have had a good laugh over the attention it raised and been in contact via email since. The Swedish man who posted the spider on eBay has also been in constant contact.

The people involved have simply been using the internet as a playground and I always approve of this. I have made some interesting online friends over the last week.

Are there any other humour websites or internet hoaxers that you admire?

I have always enjoyed the social websites such as Digg and Reddit and will quietly admit to 4chan and the like. Online writers such as Ross Amorelli, Mill Millington and internet god George Ouzounian (Maddox) have been a constant source of amusement over the last few years and I hunt their content almost religiously.
